Dr. Mario World is a puzzle game for mobile devices. It was released by Nintendo in 2019 and is now available on Android and iOS. It has over 5 million downloads in Google Play and an average review rating of 4,2. It offers a new approach to match-3 puzzles and has more than 600 stages for you to play. The game is free to play but has optional in-game purchases.
Gameplay: Match Three
In its essence, Dr. Mario World is a typical match-three game, in which you have to combine three elements in a row to solve the puzzle. However, the game offers a bit of a new approach: you no longer have to swap elements, you have to use capsules to fulfill the rows. In the game, there are viruses placed in a specific order and formation. You have to launch capsules of different colors to match the rows and eliminate the viruses. You can place and rotate capsules, but you have a limited quantity of them available for each level. There are also power-ups available to help you complete hard levels.
Graphics: Mario Style
As always, Nintendo utilizes the same visual style for its Mario games, Dr. Mario World being no exception. The visuals are stylish, recognizable, and pleasing to the eye. The game is very simple visually, but it is colorful enough to draw your attention and keep you interested. However, being interested in a long time is not an option, as the game’s monetization system is pretty weird: you get a limited amount of hearts, which are needed to unlock levels. This amount replenishes over time, but you can also pay to unlock levels. It will cost you about three dollars to play Dr. Mario World for an hour, in case you don’t wish to wait.
Controls: Something New for Puzzles
The controls are an interesting point here, as you have many options to use your capsules. You can place them directly on wanted spots to immediately activate the combo and eliminate the row of viruses, or you can place the capsules lower than the viruses, and the capsules will slowly flow in their direction. This creates some room for creativity, and the developers have managed to properly configure the difficulty of levels, so the game is fresh and interesting to play.
