In the riveting sequel to the renowned game Remnant II, the remnants of humankind fight tooth and nail for their survival, battling lethal creatures and demigod bosses in haunting realms. One of the innovative gameplay mechanics introduced in the game is called ‘Mutators’. Despite the dearth of official information regarding this feature, we have managed to gather some valuable insights from the discussions on the official Remnant II Discord server. Here, we will take an in-depth look at Mutators, a feature that adds a compelling layer of strategic depth to the game.

Understanding Remnant II Mutators

Mutators in Remnant II can be compared to weapon enhancements that can be leveled up to the maximum level of 10. Once this level is reached, they bestow a secondary bonus effect. As with the armor set bonuses in the original game, Mutators offer buffs to the weapon they are equipped on, be it ranged or melee. For instance, a hypothetical melee Mutator could initially provide a life-steal effect when battling bleeding opponents. Upon reaching the maximum level, it could grant the ability to apply a bleed status on charge attacks. One specific instance from the Remnant II Discord server was the Bandit Mutator, which can replicate the effect of the Bandit armor set for a single firearm.

Acquiring and Leveling Up Mutators

Players can get their hands on Mutators by defeating ‘Aberrations,’ and they can level up these Mutators using materials obtained from these same enemies. This introduces an engaging gameplay loop, as players must strategize and prioritize which Mutators to level up based on their respective playstyles and the challenges they face. The choice of Mutator could very well determine the outcome of a battle, adding a layer of tactical depth to the gameplay.

Mutators vs. Mods: What’s the Difference?

Interestingly, while mods can modify the appearance of the weapons, Mutators do not have any effect on weapon aesthetics. This ensures that players can equip their favorite Mutators without worrying about them clashing with the visual style of their weapons. Another crucial detail is that while boss/special weapons come with non-swappable “mods”, they can still be equipped with Mutators, adding another layer of customization to the game's unique weapons.

Expanding the Possibilities with Mutators

On the Remnant II Discord server, another example of a Mutator was provided. This Mutator could mimic the Momentum from Remnant I. Initially, ranged critical hits could enhance the ranged critical hit chance and damage by 1.5% per stack, stacking up to ten times over three seconds. As the Mutator levels up, this bonus could be incrementally increased by another 1.5% over ten levels, up to a maximum of 30%. At the maximum level, the bonus effect could be that ranged critical hits add two stacks instead of one, thus speeding up the rate of buff accumulation and extending the duration by an additional two seconds.

According to a member of the dev team known as Tragic, there are more Mutators than Armor Skills from the first game. You can have three in total, one in each of your melee, ranged, and special/boss weapons. This allows players to experiment with different combinations and strategies, providing a rich and unique gameplay experience with every run.
