Apple is the first streaming service in history that wins the Oscar in the category “Best Picture” with its drama-comedy show CODA. Meanwhile, Power of the Dog, streamed by Netflix became a winner too. The movie’s director Jane Campion received an award.

Apple TV+ was released 3 years ago. Since that time the company streamed a wide range of movies and TV shows. Three years after it finally received the first Oscar’s winning series. CODA was awarded Best Picture during the Oscar ceremony. There were two more Oscars for the movie. The Best Supporting Actor was received by Troy Kotsur, who also became the first Oscar male winner who is deaf. The Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar was given to Sian Heder.

The series has the vast majority of deaf people in the cast. It tells about the life of Ruby, played by Emilia Jones, the only hearing person in the family. They live in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Heder says that the movie is highly important for the community of deaf people, who were finally recognized in the country. According to Heder, there were not many changes in the movie industry since 35 years back Marlee Matlin won the Oscar. There is hope that Academy is changing, paying attention to the entire community of disabled people.

The movie cost $25 million dollars to Apple. The company received the rights and started its streaming on the Apple TV+. It topped the list, leaving another favorite of the audience, The Power of the Dog, streamed on Netflix behind. Meanwhile, The Power of the Dog received an award for Best Director, celebrating Jane Campion’s hard work. Jane is the third woman in the history of Oscar to receive such an award.
