Ou Wen Wei, Mantra

Portland is fortunate to have one of the world's leading Qigong experts coming to town. Ou Wen Wei is a Qigong Grand Master, author, healer, teacher, and director of Guangzhou University Science Research Institute in China. Ou will present a series of events on Pan Gu Mystical Qigong from September 24-26. Pan Gu is one of many types of Qigong, but the uniqueness is its simplicity for novices to learn.

Qigong (pronounced "Chi-Kung") is an ancient self-healing meditative exercise combining movement and breath to enhance the flow of energy or qi in the body and mind and to improve circulation and the immune function. The key emphasis of Qigong is to teach people how to remain well.

Medical studies have also shown that doing Qigong regularly helps decrease the heart rate and blood pressure, provides oxygen to the body and helps the immune system. It also coordinates right and left brain activity which helps to free the mind from anxiety, promoting more restful sleep and mental clarity. Because of Qigong's popularity it is implemented in many hospitals, wellness programs, and community centers throughout the country. Qigong is unique because it can be performed standing, sitting, walking, or lying down.

Qi is energy in the form of molecular movement which surrounds the body and communicates with the mind-body. "Our ancestors once pointed out," comments Ou, "that qi is life force, Qi is the commander in chief to blood, and blood is mother of qi." Ou goes on to explain that "diffusion of qi field is wave-like just as that of magnetic, electric and ray fields". These statements expound that qi has an element of physical particles and life-force. It cannot help but remind us of wave-particle parallelism in quantum mechanics. "The vitality or life-force of qi plays an important role of moving energy throughout different organs, metabolism, and transforming substance into energy."

The practice of Qigong can range from standing still to complex calisthenic type movement. The Pan Gu Mystical Qigong form which Ou will be teaching is a standing form with simple hand movements suitable for people with limited physical mobility or anyone for that matter.

Pan Gu Mystical Qigong known as "The Heaven, Earth, Sun and Moon Gong" was formulated by Ou according to the basic characteristics of the physiological structures of the human body and the relationship between man and the universe. It is based on an ancient Chinese creation myth in which the qi of the dying Pan Gu was transformed into the heavens and earth, and his sperm into mankind. This illustrated vividly the close interrelationship between heavens, earth and man.

Ou believes that by exercising his form of Qigong, people will benefit by absorbing directly the material elements of nature which are beneficial to the human body. All movement, says Ou, is under the control of energy, and energy equals power and motion.

Chinese ancient philosophical thought focuses on the harmony between heaven, earth, and man. Ou believes that when the relationship between the four elements of heaven, earth, sun and moon loses balance, existence with natural law is directly influenced. When natural harmony is altered, disturbance and struggle is brought about.

Ou believes the main cause of disease is due to fatigue and the wear of the physiological organs and functions after continuous overwork. This leads to physiological obstructions which produce disease. "My wish," comments Ou, "is that all people will become healthy in the world. I devote my love for mankind by teaching Pan Gu Mystical Qigong."
