Partnering: Relationships as a Joint Venture by Hal and Sidra Stone

Reviewed by Connie Hill, New Renaissance Bookshop, Portland OR

Many people can no longer be in old form relationship. They are searching for new ways to be together. In their new book, Partnering: Relationships as a Joint Venture, Drs Hal and Sidra Stone propose partnering as an evolutionary step away from the traditional hierarchical relationship. Partnering takes you out of hierarchical relationships, which are either positive: giving and forgiving; or negative: judging and feeling the victim, and into equality. Partnering is also a creative way to work with judgment. If you don't deal with vulnerability you get judgment toward another person. Judgment is based on your disowned self.

Each relationship is a closed energy system. You can't change another person, but if you change your half of the energy system, it very frequently re-balances. Personal and impersonal energy is another piece. A person with personal energy loves to be linked all the time--more is better. The impersonal person is more separate. Invariably we pull in our opposites. The book explores these energetics and how to play your own energetic instrument with consciousness and use it in a creative way.

The book shows a way to work on relationships as a spiritual path and that nothing is wrong or right. If we follow our relationships and where they lead us and do the work, we evolve on our spiritual and evolutionary path. We broaden and become more self actualized and far more energetically sensitive to ourselves and to the whole world.

Hal & Sidra Stone will lead a workshop based on their new book at New Renaissance Bookshop on March 4. The workshop will be at 10:30-1:30 p.m. for $30. Call 503-224-4929 to register. Connie Hill works at New Renaissance Bookshop and is a local astrologer. She can be reached at 503-291-8229 ext. 2 or gmnite@yahoo.com.

The Meaning Of Life by Tom Gregory, Living Spirit Press

Reviewed by Miriam Knight

One might think that a book entitled The Meaning Of Life is a bit presumptuous, or perhaps a sequel to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Not at all. It is, in fact, an impressive and intelligent synthesis of metaphysics, philosophy, science, world religion and popular culture woven together into a coherent world view and guide to life. But what really sets Tom Gregory's book apart is that it is FUN! It brings the lofty realms of metaphysics into a form and language accessible to anyone and it even has cartoon illustrations! This is an inspired (in every sense of the word) book, warmly recommended to anyone, no matter where they are on their spiritual path. But don't just take my word for it.

Rev. Mary Manin Morrissey said, "When you read The Meaning Of Life with care and put its lessons into practice, this is a book that can transform your life. Tom Gregory uses a synthesis of the wisdom of many voices throughout history along with his own personal experience and spiritual grounding to present thoughtful and enlightened answers to our most urgent questions. Anyone who is serious about growing spiritually and living a good life will value this book."

Conscious Evolution: Awakening the Power of Our Social Potential by Barbara Marx Hubbard

Reviewed by Miriam Knight

Barbara Marx Hubbard is a vibrant white-haired dynamo who calls herself an 'evolutionary fundamentalist'. Two thousand years ago Jesus came to show us what we could do. The second coming, she suggests, will be the welling up of consciousness within ourselves of that which is in Christ. But she doesn't stop at the evolution of the individual. She is pointing the way to a transformation of society as a whole.

By discovering our essence as co-creators of our universe we move through the stages of self discovery, heart connection, discovering our life purpose, using intuition to make decisions, commitment to a shared purpose and co-creation of a future that fulfils our spiritual path as well as our worldly occupation. The emphasis is on the expansion of the collective consciousness. The most important action we can take in this regard is to hasten he connectedness of the positive efforts, initiatives and projects emerging all around us, and foster the synergy among them.

As idealistic as she might seem, Barbara Marx Hubbard has a steel core of political sophistication and pragmatism. She understands, for example, that the military/industrial complex must be reckoned with, and proposes redirecting their efforts, literally, to the stars to space exploration. In 'walking her talk', she has begun training a core group that will be prepared to go out and seed the formation of other co-creative communities. This book is serving as the textbook for the group and she hopes that the model will be successfully worked out by the end of the year.
