As we greet the 21st century we see many shifts occurring in our culture, shifts which can be paired with current astrological configurations. By examining the symbolism of the planets, we develop greater insight into these cultural shifts. On December 30th, 1999 the asteroid Chiron joined the planet Pluto in the constellation of Sagittarius. The coming together of these two bodies has only occurred 4 times in the last 200 years, pointing even further to the event's significance.
This stellular event is extremely important in many ways, but is particularly significant to modern day psychology and may in fact represent a complete transformation in our approach to emotional and psychological healing.
Pluto has been traveling through Sagittarius since 1995. Pluto represents a lifting of the veil of the unconscious. As Pluto moves through a sign, we see tremendous awareness, transformation and conciousness raising in the areas represented by the sign. Often times cultural secrets are exposed and we are forced to address very dysfunctional sides of ourselves. When Pluto was in Libra (1972- 84), the sign of relationships and cooperation, we witnessed a dramatic rise in divorce rates and an increased awareness of our weaknesses regarding relationships. As Pluto moved through Scorpio (1983-1995), the sign of sex and violence, we became aware of the high incidence of sexual violence, incest and abuse. Our culture began to develop treatment and support for victims of sexual violence and trauma.
Now as Pluto passes through Sagittarius (1995-2008), the sign of honesty and belief systems, we are becoming more and more aware of the high incidence of hypocrisy in our political leaders. We are also learning much about religious cults, ethnic cleansing and the potential repercussions of extreme belief systems.
The asteroid Chiron is often referred to as the "wounded healer." As Chiron moves through the constellations we see acute crises surfacing the need and opportunity for healing. Parallel to the appearance of societal wounds, we see new healing tools emerge aimed at shifting this societal woundedness into recovery and wisdom. As Chiron moves through the sign of Sagittarius, we are witness to many shocking outbursts of violence based on belief systems. Some of these outbursts have occurred in schools and in educational settings, which interestingly are associated with Sagittarius. We are being given the opportunity to heal the woundedness around our belief systems and around extreme judgments made against others. We are being challenged to examine all of our belief systems including our beliefs about emotional healing.
Much of modern day psychology focuses on deep emotional work (Pluto) and the development of insight as a tool for healing. Many of us have spent years in therapy and have developed as much insight as possible. Yet many of our wounds remain just that, wounds. We understand our experiences but still feel helpless around healing them. In some ways, we have become a victim of our wounds, dependent upon them for our identify. We struggle with feeling victim to many aspects of our lives, unable to take responsibility for our health.
As we enter the Age of Aquarius, we leave the Age of Pisces, strongly associated with the Judeo-Christian tradition. This tradition is entrenched in the experience of victimization, martyrdom and sacrifice. Before we exit this Piscean time, we must heal these weaker aspects of the Piscean age. It is time to leave the victim identity and move toward an identity that focuses on the larger picture including group consciousness and connectivity as symbolized by the Age of Aquarius.
The joining of Chiron and Pluto in Sagittarius symbolizes the shifting from a victim identity to an identify based on higher spiritual (Sagittarius) knowledge. It calls for the transformation (Pluto) of our healing process (Chiron), especially our psychological (Pluto) healing process. We begin to see the development of new techniques, tools and healing approaches in modern psychology. These modalities, referred to as energy psychology, are aimed at healing the energetic patterns holding the emotional wounds. These approaches incorporate the Eastern concepts of Chi (energy) and use acupressure points as well as kinesiology (muscle testing). Interestingly, Sagittarius is associated with interacting with other cultures and today Western psychology is meeting Eastern healing. Energy psychology often bypasses the emotional process as it targets patterns that are holding us in a state of woundedness. We develop insight as the healing unfolds, and the healing occurs not only on the emotional level but the deep energetic level as well.
We are beginning to change our core belief systems (Sagittarius) about healing (Chiron) and deep transformation (Pluto). We no longer are entrenched in the belief that emotional healing is a long, gut-wrenching process. We have expanded our vision to include transforming emotions from an energetic level. We are healing our geneological wounds, those wounds that we may have been carrying for hundreds of years through our lineage. Pluto represents these geneological and archetypal wounds. Pluto and Chiron together bring healing to these areas. We are also healing our wounds about spirituality (Sagittarius) and learning to be in touch with spirit without being in pain. Our ability to rejoice in our connectedness with god energy is truly an opening to a new level of experience.
